For I Was: Japanese-Americans of Indiana
For I Was is a exploration of the Japanese-American experience, captured through personal narratives and treasured belongings. During my time in Indianapolis, Indiana, I met with Japanese Americans of various generations, engaging in intimate interviews that delved into their lives and family histories. These conversations uncovered deeply personal stories, weaving together the past and present of a community often overlooked in the broader American narrative. Participants shared cherished objects—artifacts that serve as powerful symbols of identity, resilience, and familial bonds. This body of work encapsulates the essence of these individuals and their ancestral journeys, inviting viewers to connect with the lived histories embedded within these personal items. The project not only preserves these narratives but also amplifies the voices of those who have carried their heritage forward, offering a window into the complexities of Japanese-American life in the Midwest.
